Be wary that there is a scam going on whereby the scammers pretend to be HMRC and send e mails out to individuals telling them that they are due a small tax repayment – always £188.50 on the ones that Quality Guild member, Dodd & Co. have seen. They ask you to click on the link, and then you will then be asked to provide your bank details and security passwords and they will then steal money from your account.
Dodd & Co. have seen 2 slightly different versions of this in the last few days. However, the English on both is slightly strange, American references to “your fiscal position” and include spelling mistakes.
We would hope that these are obvious scams and that no one will respond. If you get anything from HMRC along these lines check with your accountant to verify them.
As a general rule no one should be giving out their bank details to anyone when they are not expecting to, and do not know why they are doing it.
